How Workmode works

When you check in, your browser downloads and uploads data to and from Workmode’s own server for a few seconds, and the server measures how fast it arrived. The result is saved with the place you picked.

A check-in is verified when your device’s location was within 500 metres of the place, and within twice the accuracy your device reported. It shows the person was plausibly there, not testing from home.

It is the median of its trusted, verified check-ins — the middle value, not the average — so one person tethering to their phone, or one unusually fast test, does not decide it.

From members. A review gives a place an overall rating from 1 to 5, and after a check-in you can give a quick thumbs up or down on things like quiet, coffee and power outlets. Where a place also has a Google rating, it is shown separately and never mixed into the community’s score.

It compares each place’s listed opening hours with the current time. “Work now” shows places near you, using the time on your device; “Open now” on a city page uses that city’s local time, so it is right wherever you are looking from. Opening hours come from Google and Foursquare and can be out of date, so check before a long trip.

Each list has one clear rule: measured wifi of 25 Mbps or faster, a community score of 4 out of 5 or more for quiet or power outlets, 4.5 or more for coffee, or opening until 21:00 or later. A list only appears in a city once at least three places qualify.

Yes. Sign in and suggest it with its name, city and kind of place. Every suggestion is reviewed before it appears, so the list stays useful.

Your rank goes up with every check-in and review, from Newcomer to Legend. Badges mark particular things you have done, like working from three countries or finding a connection faster than 100 Mbps.

Not to browse or run a speed test. You need one to write reviews, post in the community, suggest places, and have your check-ins show under your name.
